Serving God with Gladness of Heart
Deuteronomy 28:47–48 · Psalm 16:11
Pastor Abraham · CFAN Chicago
"The service of God is not a burden, but a delight to the regenerate heart. If Christ be precious, service will be pleasant; if we love him, we shall serve him gladly."
"God requires that we should serve Him not only with the outward profession of the mouth, but also with a willing and joyful heart... For if we do not serve Him with gladness amid our abundance, it is a sign of ingratitude."
A Question Every Believer Must Answer
This Sunday, Pastor Abraham delivered a strong and timely message titled "Serving God with Gladness of Heart", anchored in Deuteronomy 28:47–48 and Psalm 16:11.
The message confronts a vital question every believer must answer: How are you serving God?
God is not only concerned with your service. He is concerned with your heart while serving. Serving God without joy leads to spiritual dryness. Serving God with gladness releases strength, endurance, and intimacy with Him.
Hindrances to Serving God with Gladness
Underestimation of God's Goodness
God reminded Israel that He had chosen them, yet they still doubted His love.
When you lose sight of how good God has been, gratitude fades. You begin to question His love instead of resting in it. Your awareness of God's goodness shapes your response to Him. If you forget His goodness, service becomes heavy. If you remember His goodness, service becomes joyful.
"The greater your knowledge of the goodness and grace of God on your life, the more likely you are to praise Him in the storm."
Unmet Expectations
Hope deferred makes the heart sick.
Disappointment has a way of draining joy. When life does not go as planned, the heart grows weary. You may have prayed, believed, and waited — yet things did not turn out the way you expected. If you are not careful, you begin to serve God with frustration instead of joy.
Do not focus on what did not happen. Recognize what God is still doing.
"When one door of happiness closes, another opens; the danger is looking so long at the closed door that we miss the one that is open."
Entitlement
Israel complained about manna while forgetting slavery in Egypt.
Entitlement blinds you to God's provision. When you believe you deserve more, you stop appreciating what you have. Gratitude cannot grow in a heart filled with entitlement.
"The more you see your own flaws and sins, the more precious, electrifying, and amazing God's Grace appears to you."
Difficulties and Challenges of Life
Naomi saw her pain and concluded that God had dealt bitterly with her.
Life's hardships can shape your perception of God. Trials test your perspective — they reveal whether your joy is based on circumstances or on God. Keep moving forward, even in difficulty.
The storm does not define you. Your response in the storm does.
Forgetfulness & Spiritual Numbness
Israel quickly forgot His works and turned away.
Forgetting God is one of the fastest ways to lose joy. Spiritual numbness develops when remembrance is absent. If you do not intentionally remember, you will gradually disconnect.
"We are too prone to engrave our trials in marble and write our blessings in sand."
Importance of Serving God with Gladness
It Aligns You with God's Character
God rejoices over His people with joy. When you serve Him with gladness, you reflect His nature — you become a mirror of who He is.
It Is Evidence of Spiritual Maturity
Paul and Silas praised God in prison. Their joy was not tied to comfort but to conviction. Maturity is revealed when you can worship in difficult moments. When life becomes fragile, gratitude becomes real.
It Honors the Presence of God
Sadness before the king was not acceptable. In the presence of God, joy matters. Your attitude in His presence reflects your understanding of who He is.
God Is Worthy
God's love is better than life. He deserves joyful service, not reluctant obedience.
It Flows from Total Surrender
The apostles rejoiced even after suffering. This kind of joy is not natural — it comes from complete surrender to God.
A Transformed Heart
Serving God with gladness is not about perfect circumstances. It is about a transformed heart. Joy in service grows when you:
- Remember God's goodness
- Release unmet expectations
- Reject entitlement
- Remain steady through challenges
- Stay spiritually aware
God is not looking for forced service. He is looking for a willing and joyful heart.
Examine Your Heart
Pause this week and examine your heart posture toward God. Are you serving out of duty or delight? Are you remembering His goodness or focusing on what is missing?
Let gratitude rise again. Let joy return to your service. Ask yourself:
- Am I truly joyful in my service to God?
- What has affected my gratitude recently?
- Have I forgotten God's goodness in any area of my life?
- What must I surrender to restore my joy?
God has been faithful. He has provided, sustained, and kept you. Stay joyful. Stay surrendered. Keep serving with gladness.
