How to Overcome the Lies of Satan

Psalm 42:5  ·  Luke 4:3-8  ·  John 10:10

Pastor Abraham Adesayo

Augustine of Hippo

"The devil does not command our thoughts, but suggests them."

Dear Church Family,

Every battle does not begin with what happens around you. Some battles begin with what you allow yourself to believe.

In this message, Pastor Abraham taught us how to recognize and overcome the lies of Satan. The enemy seeks to influence our thoughts, distort our understanding, weaken our faith, and steal what God has given us.

We must learn to identify the lies, confront them with the truth of God's Word, and protect our hearts and minds from deception.

1
Step 1

Pay Attention to Your Thoughts

One of the first steps in overcoming the lies of Satan is learning to pay attention to your thoughts - especially repetitive thoughts.

Not every thought that enters your mind deserves to be accepted. Some thoughts can become repeated patterns that influence how you see yourself, your circumstances, and even God.

Psalm 42:5  ·  Psalm 19:14

Scripture teaches us to examine what is taking place within us. The psalmist spoke to his own soul - asking why he was downcast - and redirected his heart back to God.

Ask yourself: What am I repeatedly thinking about? Does this thought agree with the Word of God? Is it strengthening my faith or pulling my heart away from trusting God?

You cannot overcome a lie you refuse to recognize.

2
Step 2

Identify the Specific Lies You Have Believed

Satan's deception began in the Garden of Eden when he challenged what God had said. He introduced a lie, and Eve began to consider it. The lie influenced her perception, her desire, and eventually her action.

Genesis 3:4–6  ·  Exodus 4:1, 10

Satan presents things in a way that appears attractive, reasonable, or harmless - but his purpose is always to move you away from God's truth. Even Moses believed a lie about his own inadequacy.

Thomas Brooks

"Satan promises the best, but pays with the worst; he promises honor, and pays with disgrace."

Think about the lies you have accepted about yourself, your future, your prayers, your circumstances, or your ability to obey God. Then ask: Is this really what God has said?

3
Step 3

Ask Yourself the Right Questions

To go deeper, Pastor Abraham encouraged us to ask ourselves important questions about the lies we have believed. These questions help expose the roots of wrong thinking.

01

Where did these lies come from?

02

When did these lies start?

03

What have they done to my faith in God?

A lie that remains unidentified can continue influencing your decisions. But when you bring it into the light and compare it with God's Word, you can begin to reject it.

4
Step 4

Do What Jesus Did: Replace Lies With Truth

Jesus showed us how to respond when Satan came with temptation. In the wilderness, Satan presented suggestions designed to challenge Jesus' identity, obedience, and trust in God. Jesus did not negotiate with the lie - He responded with the truth of Scripture.

Luke 4:3–8

Each time the enemy tempted Him, Jesus answered: "It is written." He did not engage the deception - He displaced it with the Word of God.

Do not fight a lie by simply telling yourself to stop thinking about it. Replace the lie with God's truth.

When a thought says, "God will not help me" - return to what God has said.
When a thought tells you to abandon faith - return to the truth of His Word.
When a thought contradicts what God has established - do what Jesus did. Stand on Scripture.

The answer to a lie is always truth.

Step 5

Understand That Every Temptation Is Rooted in Satan's Lies

Pastor Abraham reminded us that temptation is connected to deception. Before Judas betrayed Jesus, Satan had already influenced his heart.

John 13:2

The devil had already put into the heart of Judas to betray Jesus. The outward action began with an inward suggestion.

Temptation does not simply appear as an outward action. It can begin with a suggestion, a thought, or a lie that is entertained repeatedly. When you recognize the lie behind the temptation, you can confront the real issue.

Do not only ask, "Why am I tempted?" Ask, "What am I being made to believe?"

6
Step 6

Pray to Destroy the Root of the Lies You Have Believed

Some lies have been believed for a long time. They may have shaped the way you see yourself, your circumstances, or what God can do in your life. That is why prayer is necessary.

Gideon saw himself through the limitation of his circumstances. Yet when the angel of the Lord appeared to him, God addressed him differently - as a mighty man of valour - because God saw what Gideon had not yet believed about himself.

Judges 6:11–12  ·  Luke 1:26–29

Both Gideon and Mary were addressed by what God knew them to be - not by the lies or fears they carried within them.

Do not only pray about the symptoms. Pray about the root. Ask God to expose every lie you have believed and to establish His truth firmly in your heart.

7
Step 7

Protect What Satan Is Trying to Steal From You

Jesus made the purpose of the enemy unmistakably clear.

John 10:10

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

Recognize what the enemy is attempting to take from you:

Is he trying to steal your faith?
Is he trying to steal your confidence in God?
Is he trying to fill your mind with lies until peace becomes impossible?
Is he trying to make you believe your situation is greater than God's power?

Guard what God has placed in your life. Do not allow repeated lies to become accepted truths. Protect your faith. Protect your thoughts. Protect your confidence in God's Word.

Practical Application

Seven Ways to Overcome the Lies of Satan

  • Pay attention to repetitive thoughts. Examine what keeps returning to your mind.
  • Identify the lie. Be honest about what you have believed that does not agree with God's Word.
  • Trace the root. Ask where the lie came from and when it began.
  • Examine its effect on your faith. Identify how the lie has affected your trust in God.
  • Replace the lie with truth. Follow Jesus' example and answer deception with Scripture.
  • Pray about the root. Ask God to expose and destroy the lies that have taken hold in your thinking.
  • Protect what matters. Guard your faith and refuse to surrender what the enemy is trying to steal.

The battle against Satan's lies begins with recognizing that not every thought deserves your agreement.

Encouragement for the Week

Stand on the Truth

Do not allow a repeated thought to become an accepted truth. Bring your thoughts before the Word of God. Examine what you believe. Identify every lie that has weakened your faith, and replace it with the truth of Scripture.

Jesus did not surrender to Satan's suggestions. He answered every temptation with the truth of God's Word. You can do the same.

Reflect on these questions:

  • What thoughts have I been repeatedly accepting?
  • Which of those thoughts do not agree with God's Word?
  • Where did those lies begin?
  • What have those lies done to my faith in God?

Pay attention to your thoughts. Pray about the roots. Stand on God's truth. Protect your faith.

Know the lie. Reject the lie. Stand on the truth.
