Engaging the Mysteries
of the Kingdom

Matthew 13:11  ·  1 Corinthians 2:14

✦

Deacon James Idowu

Dear Church Family,

What if some of the victories we are praying for are not waiting on another prayer, but on our understanding and application of the spiritual laws God has already revealed?

In this powerful message, Deacon James challenged the church to understand that victory in the Kingdom of God is not accidental. God's Kingdom operates by mysteries, principles, ordinances, and spiritual laws that may appear contrary to natural reasoning but produce undeniable results when believers understand and apply them.

Jesus told His disciples that it had been given to them to know the mysteries of the Kingdom. That means these mysteries are not meant to remain hidden from believers. They are meant to be understood. They are meant to be applied. And they are meant to produce victory.

The message carried a clear challenge: we must learn the ways of God and intentionally align our lives with them.

✦
The Foundation

Understanding the Mysteries of the Kingdom

Kingdom mysteries are divine truths that are hidden from the natural mind but revealed by God to those who walk with Him.

These principles are often counterintuitive. They may appear foolish according to human reasoning. But when they are understood and applied, they produce results.

1 Corinthians 2:14

The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, because they are spiritually discerned.

As believers, we cannot therefore expect to experience Kingdom results while operating only by natural reasoning. Several important truths stood out in the message:

  • Victory in the Kingdom is not accidental.
  • The spiritual realm operates according to established laws and principles.
  • Every divine promise has corresponding conditions.
  • Kingdom results come through understanding and application.
  • Spiritual growth comes through revelation and light.

Hearing the Word is important. But hearing alone is not enough. Revelation must become application.

✦
Kingdom Paradoxes

The Kingdom Often Works Contrary to Human Reasoning

Deacon James walked the church through several Kingdom paradoxes that demonstrate how differently God's ways can operate from the natural mind.

1
Paradox 1

We Give to Receive

The natural mind says that the safest way to increase is to hold tightly to what we have. But the Kingdom teaches another principle.

Proverbs 11:24

There is one who scatters, yet increases more...

God's system of supernatural abundance involves generosity. Using the feeding of the five thousand as an example, the five loaves and two fish could not multiply while they remained in the boy's possession. They first had to be surrendered. Jesus received what was released, gave thanks, and multiplication followed.

This led to one of the strongest statements in the message:

Whatever is not surrendered cannot be multiplied.

Sometimes the very thing we are trying to preserve may be the thing God is asking us to release. Kingdom generosity is not emotional giving. It is understanding and applying a spiritual law.

2
Paradox 2

We Die to Live

Another Kingdom mystery is that life comes through death.

John 12:24

Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But when it dies, it produces much fruit.

Applied to the believer's spiritual life, whatever we refuse to die to can eventually dominate us. The flesh cannot remain in control if the spirit is going to grow.

There are desires, habits, appetites, attitudes, and forms of self-will that must be surrendered.

Spiritual maturity requires learning to tell the flesh that it is no longer in charge.

3
Paradox 3

We Serve to Lead

The world often associates leadership with control, position, and recognition. Jesus taught something different.

Luke 22:25–27

Greatness in the Kingdom is revealed through service.

Some of the people doing the most important work are often the least recognized. But heaven sees what people overlook. Faithful service does not need applause in order to have value.

Those who serve diligently without demanding recognition are often the ones God eventually raises.

Kingdom leadership is not about fighting for a title. It is about becoming trustworthy through service.

4
Paradox 4

Humility Comes Before Exaltation

1 Peter 5:6  ·  James 4:6

Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time... God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Pride is especially dangerous because Scripture does not merely say that God dislikes it. God resists it.

Humility therefore positions us for divine promotion. Jesus Himself remains the greatest example.

Philippians 2:5–11

He humbled Himself, became obedient, and took the form of a servant. Then God highly exalted Him.

The Kingdom pattern is clear: the way up begins by going down.

5
Paradox 5

Strength Is Perfected in Weakness

The world celebrates independence and self-sufficiency. The Kingdom teaches dependence upon God.

2 Corinthians 12:9

My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.

Sometimes God allows human strength to reach its limit so that we can recognize our need for Him.

Hard work has value. Diligence has value. Skill has value. But none of them can replace dependence upon God.

There are realms of victory that human strength alone cannot produce.

✦
A Helpful Picture

Different Victories Require Different Kingdom Keys

Picture a house with several rooms - a kitchen, bedroom, storage room, living room, and bathroom. One key does not necessarily open every door.

In the same way, believers must understand that different results may require the application of different Kingdom principles. Knowing one spiritual principle does not mean we understand them all.

Victory comes as we gather and apply the keys God has revealed.

Applied Example

Kingdom Keys for Financial Liberty

Speaking about financial liberty, several important keys were identified:

  • Diligence
  • Productivity
  • Mental transformation
  • Healthy relationships
  • Value creation
  • Prophetic direction

Diligence means showing up faithfully and doing what we have been assigned to do with excellence. Productivity means making a meaningful contribution wherever God has placed us.

Mental transformation matters because our thinking can limit what we are able to steward - a person cannot consistently produce victorious results while carrying a defeated mentality.

Relationships also matter. God frequently uses people as channels through which opportunities, wisdom, access, and help come. Joseph could not become prime minister of Egypt without Pharaoh. There are relationships God has placed around us that must be handled with wisdom.

Value creation is equally important. Wherever we are, we should become people who contribute, solve problems, and make things better.

Prophetic direction then works together with these other principles - prayer and prophecy do not cancel diligence, productivity, wisdom, or character. Kingdom victory requires the proper engagement of the keys God has provided.

✦
The Central Emphasis

The Ordinance of Honor

After laying this foundation, Deacon James moved into the central emphasis of the message: the ordinance of honor.

1 Samuel 2:30

Those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.

Honor is one of the most powerful yet often neglected principles in the Kingdom of God.

Believers may pray. They may fast. They may sow. They may work diligently. Yet there may still be areas where doors remain closed because the principle of honor has been neglected.

Defining Honor

What Is Honor?

The Hebrew concept of honor carries the idea of weight, significance, and substance. The Greek concept communicates value, price, esteem, and preciousness.

Honor therefore means recognizing the value God has placed upon a person, position, or sacred thing and responding appropriately. Honor affects:

  • Our attitude
  • Our speech
  • Our conduct
  • Our service

Honor is not merely what we say. It is how we treat what God has declared valuable.

Honor can release:

  • Favor
  • Access
  • Preservation
  • Promotion
  • Divine opportunities

Dishonor can produce the opposite effect.

Honor opens doors. Dishonor closes doors.

Honor is also not a spiritual gift. It is a choice. We intentionally decide to walk in honor.

A Case Study

Honor Can Become the Difference Maker

Hagar's relationship with Sarah offers an example. (Genesis 16:4–9)

After Hagar conceived, she began to despise Sarah. The relationship deteriorated until Hagar fled. But when the angel of the Lord met her, the instruction was to return and submit. The same area in which dishonor had created disorder required humility and submission for restoration.

There are levels in life where many people may have similar qualifications - similar education, similar experience, similar ability.

At that level, honor can become the difference maker.

✦
The Call

Who Does God Command Us to Honor?

1
Honor 1

Honor God

Honor begins with God. Jesus taught His disciples to pray:

Matthew 6:9

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

To hallow God's name is to approach Him with reverence. Prayer must come from the right posture - our prayers should not consist only of requests. We must learn to come before God with gratitude, reverence, submission, and worship.

God is not impressed merely by the number of words we speak. He examines the posture of the heart.

This reverence should also affect how we enter the sanctuary, how we participate in worship, and how attentive we are when the Word of God is being ministered.

2
Honor 2

Honor Your Parents

Deuteronomy 5:16  ·  Exodus 20:12  ·  Ephesians 6:1–3

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God gives you.

This command carries a promise - Scripture connects honoring parents with long life and well-being.

Parents are the human vessels through whom God gave us entrance into this world. They may not be perfect. No human being is. But imperfection does not cancel the command to honor. We cannot claim to honor God while treating our parents with contempt.

Honor may sometimes be expressed through very simple things:

  • Speaking respectfully
  • Returning their calls
  • Spending time with them
  • Supporting them
  • Caring for them as they age
  • Listening to them
  • Avoiding unnecessary arguments
  • Creating opportunities for them to bless us

Those whose parents are still alive should intentionally invest in those relationships. Do not wait until they are gone to recognize their value.

3
Honor 3

Honor Your In-Laws

Marriage expands the responsibility of honor.

Moses and Jethro offer an important example. (Exodus 18)

Moses was highly anointed. He was leading an entire nation. He spoke with God. Yet when Jethro came to visit, Moses went out to meet him, bowed before him, and welcomed him with respect.

Jethro later observed that Moses was carrying too much responsibility by himself. He counseled Moses to delegate responsibility to capable leaders. That wisdom helped preserve Moses - no one else had identified the problem in the same way. God used his father-in-law to provide wisdom for the next stage of his leadership.

Do not dismiss the people God has connected to your life. There may be wisdom, preservation, and help assigned to a relationship you have been tempted to treat casually.

4
Honor 4

Honor Spiritual Authority

Hebrews 13:17  ·  1 Thessalonians 5:12–13

Respect those who labor among you and admonish you, and esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake.

Spiritual leaders carry the responsibility of teaching, guiding, praying, correcting, and watching over the souls entrusted to them. Much like parents nurture children physically, spiritual leaders help nurture believers until Christ is formed in them.

Dishonor toward spiritual authority can create separation from the very environment God intended to use for spiritual growth.

Spiritual authority is not only about the person leading - it includes respecting the order and systems established within the house of God. Constant resistance, rebellion, gossip, and disregard for instruction are inconsistent with a lifestyle of honor.

The Example of Christ

Jesus Demonstrated Honor for Spiritual Order

The baptism of Jesus offers a powerful example.

John the Baptist recognized that Jesus was greater than he was. He initially hesitated to baptize Him. But Jesus said that it should be done in order to fulfill what was right. Jesus willingly submitted to the established order.

After His baptism, the heavens opened and the Father declared:

This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Jesus did not use His greatness as an excuse to disregard spiritual order. True greatness does not make us too important to honor.

5
Honor 5

Honor Governing Authorities

Romans 13:7

Render therefore to all their dues... honor to whom honor is owed.

This responsibility is not dependent upon personal preference. We may agree or disagree with individual leaders, but believers are still called to pray for those in authority.

The decisions of governing leaders can affect our communities, our families, and our children. Instead of allowing political disagreement to produce dishonor, believers should pray that God gives leaders wisdom and directs their decisions.

6
Honor 6

Honor Your Spouse

1 Peter 3:7

Husbands, dwell with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the wife... that your prayers be not hindered.

Honor must also exist inside the home. Husbands and wives are called to treat one another with understanding and respect.

Scripture warns that dishonor within marriage can even hinder prayer.

Kingdom principles do not apply only when we are inside church. They must govern how we treat the people closest to us.

✦
The Response

Revelation Requires Adjustment

One of the clearest challenges in the message was that revelation places responsibility upon the believer. Once God shows us His ways, we cannot continue living exactly as we did before.

Understanding must produce adjustment.

If we discover that we have been violating a Kingdom principle, the proper response is not condemnation. The proper response is correction. We adjust. We repent where necessary. We align ourselves with God's order. And we begin walking in greater understanding.

The Challenge

Engage the Mysteries for Your Victory

The message brought the church back to a foundational truth: victory in the Kingdom is not accidental.

God has revealed His ways to His people. He has given us principles for stewardship. Principles for leadership. Principles for promotion. Principles for strength. Principles for favor. And principles for honor.

The question is whether we will engage them. We cannot continually violate Kingdom principles and expect Kingdom results.

But when revelation becomes understanding, and understanding becomes obedience, believers position themselves to walk in the victory God has made available.

Learn His ways. Honor what He honors. Apply His principles. Walk in His victory.

Reflection for the Week

How Am I Treating What God Has Called Me to Honor?

  1. Am I only hearing God's Word, or am I intentionally applying what He is revealing to me?
  2. Is there anything I am holding onto that God may be asking me to surrender?
  3. Am I faithfully serving even when there is no recognition or applause?
  4. Is pride preventing me from receiving the grace or promotion God wants to bring into my life?
  5. Am I relying primarily on my own strength, or have I learned to depend upon God?
  6. How am I treating the people God has commanded me to honor?
  7. Is there a parent, in-law, spiritual leader, spouse, or person in authority whom I need to begin treating with greater respect?
  8. Have familiarity, offense, pride, or disagreement caused me to treat something God values as common?
  9. What adjustment is God asking me to make as a result of this Word?

You may discover that some of the doors you have been praying about are connected to principles God is teaching you to engage.

Encouragement for the Week

Victory Is Not Accidental

You do not have to struggle through life without understanding the ways of God.

God has not left you without direction. He has given you His Word. He has revealed His principles. He has made the mysteries of His Kingdom available to those who seek Him.

Do not become discouraged because God's way sometimes looks different from the way of the world.

Keep giving. Keep serving. Keep walking in humility. Keep depending upon His strength. Keep honoring what God has commanded you to honor. And when God reveals an area that requires adjustment, respond with humility.

Victory is not accidental. Walk in revelation. Apply the Word. Honor what God honors, and trust Him with the results.
